Have you ever calculated how much time you waste on rework because you simply didn't have enough concentration to do it right the first time? How many problems have you had because your emotional state wasn't stable enough? How many opportunities have you lost because of a high level of stress?

Excerpt from the book Breathing, by Professor DeRose.
Why do we waste so much time on rework?
Some days we're more scattered - or we think we are.
This shows itself in the difficulty in focusing on a task and finishing it. Suddenly, there's always a good
reason to stop and start something else.
At these times, it's worth reflecting:
- Is it just dispersion?
- If we switch to a new task, will we actually be able to complete it?
- Isn't that a form of internal denial about the initial task?
- What if we switch to something completely different - like ditching the spreadsheet to organize the kitchen? Would we flow better in this second activity?
Self-knowledge: the key to the process
The process of self-knowledge is fundamental to understanding how we work and how we can make better choices on a daily basis.
If the task is not urgent, perhaps we can afford to put it off until later, without guilt.
(If the spreadsheet doesn't need to be handed in today, it's fine to put it off until tomorrow!)
Planning is essential, but planning with awareness and letting go of expectations is even more important.
How to reduce rework in practice
To avoid wasting time and energy, you can make a few simple adjustments:
- Observe yourself to understand which tasks flow better on certain days and at certain times.
- Organize your schedule according to this pattern (e.g. a quieter Sunday can be great for activities that require concentration).
- Maintain flexibility**: if something isn't flowing, don't push it any further than necessary.
- Practice focus techniques on a daily basis**, to strengthen your concentration even on less attractive activities.
The process of self-knowledge is the path up the mountain, not the summit.
Each conscious observation and adjustment is a step that helps to avoid rework and to live with more focus and presence.
